Four Commonly Misused Words - Hispanic, Caucasian, White & Female
Hispanic for Latino - NOPE
The word Hispanic was derived from Hispaniola (Spanish speaking island) and the word Hispanic is meant to indicate all Spanish speaking people (including Spain), but leaves out Portuguese speaking people (Brazil).
And more troublesome, onomatopoeically Hispanic sounds really bad.
Hiss-panic
- 'hiss' - the sound a snake makes - associated with evil
- 'panic' - what fearful people do
Hi-span-ic
Hi-sp--ic
- These two ways of hearing the word make is sound like both a stereotype and a racial slur. They sound like either Spic-n-Span - a cleaning product, or 'spic' a racial slur for Latinos.
Latino, Latina, Latin@, Latinx - YES
These are inclusive terms for all people from all of Latin American and the Iberian Peninsula.
Caucasian for European-American - NOPE
Caucasian is from the family of race words: Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid
The term Negro is no-longer politically correct, and neither should Caucasian be widely used unless trying to indicate people from India to Europe - what the word really means.
European-American - YES
People understand it makes sense to say African-American, Latino-American, Asian-American, yet most people do not say European-American
Giving European-Americans a free pass to identify as only White makes them not sound like foreigners to the Americas - but they are foreign colonizers of the Americas. European-Americans are the first alien people in the Americas. European-Americans are alien to the Americas.
White for European-American - NOPE
Using the term White for European-Americans gives those people an unearned privilege of purity and righteousness.

Another European-American Crying for What Now?
Earnest Harris posted about this on his blog No More Race.
Listen to the video. My response is below the video.
Professor MacDonald can take his European-American self back to Europe. He is occupying Amerindian land and is from a long line of oppressors and thieves of Native American land, Mexican land, African people and African-American labor. Not to mention that the ideology of white supremacy in the U.S. has demonized black and brown people, perpetuated Jim Crow into the war on drugs and stop & frisk and created the largest prison industrial complex in the world. People are scared of white pride groups because they have a legacy of abusing their power. I don’t want to hear his wining about the poor whites when it’s his ethnic group (the newly created ‘white’ ethnic group) that choose to be abusive and to use their white privilege to get mortgage approvals and business loans while at the same time denying people of color equal access.

Replace the "White" ethnic label in the U.S.
by Glenn Robinson
Why are European-American's called 'White'?
Many ethnic labels have changed through the course of U.S. history. The next one that needs to change is "White".
Modern politically correct terms for every ethnic group have a tie to the regional heritage of that group -- except for White.
Vague and disrespectful labels of the past have changed to respectful modern descriptions:
Oriental changed to Asian-American
Negro changed to African-American
Native Savage changed to Native-American
European-American changed to White.
Using color labels verbally is acceptable. It's conversational and prevents guessing wrong about nation of origin. Writing should be more precise. Color labels should not be the first choice. When official paperwork is involved, especially government forms, what would this color label imply? The term "White" in the U.S. was originally used as a way to group all Europeans (regardless of color) together as a team because it was the "whites" against the people of color. The early days of the U.S. was not primarily about fitting into your group of national origin, it was an actual 'race' war (for what was understood at the time), due to the sudden collision of different phenotypes brought together by the new larger and faster sailing ships of the day. Everyone had to make sense of each other, and phenotypes of a feather flocked together.
Using the word European-American makes European-American's sound like foreigners. (Which they are - but European-Americans don't want to have a foreign sounding label. Another issue is that using the word "White" is perpetuating a false brand of purity, goodness, and cleanness.
I don't expect my European-American brothers and sisters to stop using the label of "White" for themselves, nor the government to stop using the term "White". I think they like the positive branding.
However, all my non-European-American brothers and sisters should be happy to label European-Americans what they really are: European-Americans.
