Who's the real illegal alien - Farrakhan on Immigration & the Mexican Border

"Speaking on the so-called immigration controversy during his Oct. 21, 2012 address, Minister Farrakhan said everyone should be given the path to citizenship, but not through being forced to fight in the military in foreign wars. According to analysts, there are nearly 12-million undocumented "illegal aliens," which the Minister says is really a misnomer because there's no such thing as an illegal alien."

Is the U.S. Border Patrol the next Administration flashpoint?

HT Southern Borders Communities Coalition

The Veterans Affairs crisis ended this week in the resignation of General Shinseki, but Steve Inskeep of NPR says the next agency to come under scrutiny might be Homeland Security.

“There have been a lot of questions about the Border Patrol shooting unarmed people, including Mexicans,” said Inskeep.

“There have been a lot of questions about Americans being searched by the Border Patrol. And a lot of questions in that agency about transparency, some of the same kinds of questions being asked about the VA.”

Are Nationalists the new Segregationists?

by Glenn Robinson

For most of U.S. history there have been segregationists. Today you don't hear of them so much because times have changed - or have they?

Can it be that the those families who used to preach separate but equal, are now the families who are anti-immigrant? I say families because xenophobia is taught, and I feel sorry for any children born to racist or xenophobic parents.

Before the Civil Rights act of 1964 outlawed segregation, the white majority were open about their desire to keep the races separate. When the Supreme Court ruled that is no longer acceptable, what happened to the feelings of "us vs. them" that the segregationist had?

Those people are still prevalent in the U.S.

Here is where they re-focused their energy:

  1. Segregate by building more prisons (New Jim Crow)
  2. Fill the prisons by creating a "War on Drugs" - which is a war primarily on black and brown people. The stop-n-frisk statistics prove it.
  3. Continue defacto school segregation by limiting public school attendance based on residential zip codes.
  4. Segregate the U.S. from the brown "others" by building a wall at the U.S. Mexico border
  5. Increasing ICE raids to segregate Hispanic Latinos out of the U.S.
PS - A nationalist is someone who thinks their country is better than any other country (a kind of national racism). Patriotic is the positive word to describe those who love their country.

Deadly crossing: Death toll rises among Economic Refugees

"Crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally has always been dangerous, but this year heat and drought have made the journey particularly deadly. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, this part of the border has seen a sharp rise in both rescues and deaths of people crossing the border illegally. So far in 2012, agents have rescued more than 310 people, and found nearly 150 dead in the Rio Grande Valley — an increase of more than 200 percent over the last fiscal year." - MORE -

Teachers 4 Social Justice Conference

Mission High School
San Francisco, CA
by Glenn Robinson

Teachers 4 Social Justice Conference is an annual free event held in San Francisco, California

The event is open to anyone and everyone; not just teachers.

This year they had two keynote speakers. The morning keynote speaker was Sean Arce, former Director of Mexican American Studies in the Tucson Unified School District. The evening speaker was Sonia Nieto, Professor Emerita of Language, Literacy and Culture at the School of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst.

After the first keynote speaker the audience broke out into different classrooms. This was held at Mission High School, so you actually sit in a high school classroom to learn your topic of Social Justice. The list of classes offered in 2012 is here.

After your first class you break for lunch and either wait in the long line for the free vegetarian lunch or go across the street for a bite at Dolores Park Cafe.

When you return from lunch you see the second keynote speaker. After that you breakout into your workshop in another classroom.

I attended "Rethinking The 'Line Between Us' Bringing History Alive In The Classroom" which was taught by none other than Bill Bigelow, author of the banned book "Rethinking Columbus" and a Social Studies teacher for almost 30 years who had taught in Oregon. And yes, he taught about the U.S. Mexico boarder even though he was one state away from the border.

In class he had us read a couple paragraphs from a slip of paper about a real character from the Mexican-American War. He had us assume the role of that person, name tag and all, then go around the class and find another real character who had something to gain from the war; who had something to loose from the war; and someone who didn't care either way.

I really enjoyed the day and hope to make it back every year.

You can follow Teachers 4 Social Justice on FacebookTwitter and WordPress

Although their conference is free they do ask for at least a $5 donation.
